We all know that to build something you build it from the ground up and not from the top down. With all the attention of late the Mets have received for being ‘cheap’ in the draft I thought I would point out a few things.

  • JJ Cooper over at Baseball America has a list of the money spent on the top ten rounds of the 2009 draft. The Mets unsurprisingly spent the least.
  • Alex Rodriguez the best player of the last generation before money spent on baseball players skyrocketed to where it is today made $442,333 in his rookie season as a once in a lifetime 1st pick.
  • I think it is safe to assume Strasburg will make 3-4 million in his rookie season after signing a 15.1 million dollar 4 year contract as the new once in a lifetime 1st pick.

What I am getting at is times change. If you want to have the best players of the generation now, you can not draft like you want the best players 15 years ago. I am aware the Mets did not have a first round pick, but in my opinion they should have saved that money to pay multiple...
