Bucs add 5 to 40-man

November 20, 2008

In a move that I was waiting for all day but really isn't very exciting, the Pirates added 5 minor leaguers to the 40-man roster (to avoid exposing them in the Rule-5 Draft). Today was the deadline for such moves.
---
Jose Tabata and Neil Walker are no-brainers. Jeff Sues was our system's minor league pitcher of the year. Steve Lerud (C) is tearing up the winter leagues. I have no idea who Ronald Uviedo (RHP) is.

These transactions set the 40-man roster at....40 men. No reason for any empty spots now (we didn't drop anyone...the roster was at 35 before today).

A little more on these guys...
Walker is supposedly going to compete with Andy LaRoche for a starting job this year according to the [Pirates.com] article, but I highly doubt he will. He's a former 1st round pick, was transferred from catcher to third, is from Pittsburgh, and hasn't exactly dominated the minors like we hoped he would. Still, you have to protect him.
