Waxman to Clemens: Gotcha!

February 28, 2008

The House Oversight Committee, headed by Henry Waxman, has sent a letter to Attorney General Mukasey recommending a full investigation of Roger Clemens’ testimony. A full list of the Committee’s issues with the testimony can be found in this staff analysis.

I’ve read through the full document and the content seems very similar to the perjury charges brought against Barry Bonds a few months ago. The Committee appears to believe that Clemens is not telling the truth and, honestly, after reading their analysis I have trouble believing him too. Andy Pettitte’s deposition, as cited in the document, strongly backs McNamee.

If Clemens is in fact found to be lying, did he really believe he could get away with this? I think he assumed that he could clean his record with the 60 Minutes interview, the press conference, and the filing of a defamation suit against McNamee. Once it hit Congress, he was helplessly stuck to a faulty story.

**UPDATE** MLB.com reports that the FBI has opened an investigation on Clemens. This story won’t be...
